Individual and Couple Counselling

Laura Green - Professional Counsellor Norwich

About me

I am an integrative counsellor, which means that I draw upon different types of therapy in order to tailor my approach to your individual and ongoing needs. I take my lead from you, as I believe that you are the expert on yourself. Together, we will explore whatever part of your journey you’re on; I’d like to help you discover more choices in how you respond to situations and more movement in places you might feel stuck. I have witnessed and been exposed to many traumatic and stressful situations. I am aware of the stress, anxiety and all the associated emotions that can create difficulty in our lives when we don’t, or can’t, acknowledge our feelings – both to others and, more importantly, to ourselves. Effective therapy requires that the counsellor exhibits respect, authenticity, empathy and acceptance. I work very hard to cultivate and nurture a loving and empathic stance with my clients. It is my hope that the acceptance and positive regard the client feels through our work will eventually become internalized and they will begin to feel more accepting and positive toward themselves.

Experience

I trained as a psychotherapeutic counsellor after an extensive career in teaching and school leadership. I have worked as a volunteer for The Samaritans and Citizens Advice Bureau. I have worked for low-cost counselling charities: 4Cs (Centres for Christian Care and Counselling) and Off The Record. I am experienced in working with clients who have found themselves dealing with a range of issues including depression, anxiety, relationship problems, grief, addiction, sex abuse, emotional abuse and trauma. My experience also includes working with neuro-diverse clients and people with intersecting social identities which have led them to experience oppression, domination and/or discrimination.

Depression, anxiety, relationship problems, grief, addiction, sex abuse, emotional abuse and trauma.  My experience also includes working with neuro-diverse clients and people with intersecting social identities which have led them to experience oppression, domination and/or discrimination.

I am an integrative counsellor which means that I look at the whole person, taking into account your mental, physical and emotional needs.  I will use tools and techniques from different modalities to tailor an individual approach that works for you.  I aim to build a trusting and non-judgemental relationship that helps you develop self-awareness.  Understanding the causes of your behaviour and triggers, will give you the confidence to set goals and develop new behaviours that can lead to improved satisfaction with life.

We can discuss whether you would like to have short-term or longer-term counselling.

I will encourage you to talk about the things that are most important to you at the current time.  We will explore together the areas of your life that are difficult for you so that we can keep in mind what it is that you want to change.  As you become more comfortable to express your feelings with me, together we can begin to understand the way in which past relationships and/or experiences may be playing a part in your current life.

Psychotherapy has been shown to be beneficial in many situations, but it can be challenging.  You may experience thoughts and feelings that you have previously preferred not to acknowledge.  We will work together at a pace that is right for you, on what you want to get out of counselling.  I cannot guarantee specific outcomes, but if you are concerned that counselling is not meeting your expectations then please talk to me about it.
